FOOD CLOSET
MISSION & HISTORY.
Mission: Carson Valley food Closet is dedicated to providing supplemental food assistance to individuals and families facing food insecurity while fostering a community of support dignity and hope.
The Carson Valley Community Food Closet is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 to provide supplemental food assistance and work toward food security in Douglas County. Initially established by Douglas County Social Services and the Carson Valley United Methodist Church, it has grown significantly over the years, moving from a garage to multiple locations before constructing its own facility in 2019.
As the primary provider of food assistance in Douglas County, the Food Closet distributes over a million pounds of food annually in partnership with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada (FBNN). It serves the community through monthly and weekly food distributions, offering groceries, produce, meat, dairy, hygiene items, and pet food, as available.
The Food Closet also collaborates with local organizations such as Community Health Workers, Douglas County Social Services, and the Washoe Tribe to provide additional support services.
